The 22-minute documentary is an intervention attempt against using the badly-compressed musical format for music consumption in the industry. The musicians argue that the current popular compression format, MP3, distorts and simplifies the sound they create and accustoms the audience to the lower-quality version of the original music they produce.

The film starts with praises about the sound and music. As it develops, musicians criticize the music industry and infrastructure for compromising the sound quality for accessibility (easier to distribute, store, download, etc.). They draw some analogies like exhibiting the lower-quality versions of other art pieces such as paintings. They argue that the film industry tackled against it and has made huge progress in tech, but the music industry just avoids it.

It’s not directly related to “electronic music,” but it relates to at least the final stage of any music production which is mixing and mastering. The musicians argue that the detailed decisions they make at this point are lost in the finalized consumer products.

The comparisons that the film makes between the original music and the compressed mp3 versions don’t sound realistic. The film was made in 2014, not sure about the developments on this quality side of streamed music.

Some famous musicians and producers are interviewed, and they all support the core claim of the documentary: Hans Zimmer, Kate Nash, Steve Aoki, Slash, Snoop Dogg, Quincy Jones, and Veronica Berry.
